The next film that director Hayao Miyazaki plans to make is being kept a secret from the public.
It’s a big week for Studio Ghibli, and we can thank the Cannes Festival for that. All eyes are on the big screen in France, where some of the top directors are presenting their next projects. For others, they are enjoying themselves at the Cannes Festival, like to Studio Ghibli executives. Leading the group at the Cannes Film Festival is Goro Miyazaki, who said in a recent interview that his father is keeping his next project a secret.
During his press conference in Cannes, Goro Miyazaki was questioned on his father’s future plans for The Boy and the Heron. Under Hayao Miyazaki’s direction, the Oscar-winning film has evolved into a new classic, so naturally, everyone is curious as to whether additional films will be directed by him. Although Goro Miyazaki claims he hasn’t been informed anything about the movie pitch, previous reports have stated that Hayao is eager to make additional films.
“He refuses to reveal their identity to anyone. Absolutely nobody,” Goro remarked in reference to his father’s screenplay proposals. The Studio Ghibli executive claimed that as soon as The Boy and the Heron’s production was completed, Hayao started brainstorming ideas for a new film. As you may imagine, the director is still considering the project. Goro also states that Studio Ghibli as a whole is recuperating from the intense production schedule of the previous picture.
“After spending seven years on an animated movie, the director and the staff as a whole are incredibly exhausted,” Goro said. “I think the studio needs some time to recover.”
It’s obvious that Miyazaki and the staff at Studio Ghibli are recovering from a demanding production schedule. Although the director turned eighty-three years old in January, Miyazaki still appears eager to work. Miyazaki has earned a respite after dedicating nearly a decade to The Boy and the Heron. But perhaps Goro will discover his father’s vision when he’s ready to go back and start over.
