As long as production hasn’t been cancelled, there’s hope!
When an anime based on a manga reaches its final episode, fans of the original work are already hoping for a second season, saying things like, “They haven’t done that episode yet,” or “That character hasn’t appeared yet.”
There are also an increasing number of cases where the production of a sequel is announced as soon as the ending, but it is not uncommon for there to be no news after that. We will focus on works that make fans anxious, wondering, “When on earth will we be able to see the sequel?”
“Drifters” Season 2, “Drifters,” which has been serialized in “Young King Ours” by Kouta Hirano since 2009, is a Sengoku samurai fantasy manga in which historical heroes are summoned to another world and engage in deadly battles. In 2016, the anime, which fans of the original work had been waiting for, was broadcast, and it was highly praised for its faithful reproduction of the battle scenes and comedy parts that were just like the original.
In the final cut of the final episode of the anime, the caption “SECOND SEASON SEE YOU AGAIN TOKYO 20XX” was displayed, and the magazine released immediately after the announcement announced that the second season of the anime is currently in the works. While fans are happy, there are also many reactions, such as “We’ve almost used up all the original manga stock in the first season, so we don’t know how many years it will take to air.” Drifters currently has only seven volumes of the manga, and it took about five years from the release of volume 6 to the release of volume 7.
Episodes 13 and 14 were released as OVAs following the anime broadcast. Episode 15 was included on the DVD included with the special edition of volume 6 of the manga. Still, there seem to be many fans who are looking forward to the sequel being broadcast on TV, saying, “There are many scenes I want to see in the anime, so I’ll wait forever until I have enough original manga stock,” and “My expectations for Drifters season 2 increased even more after I went to the Hirano Kouta exhibition.”
Golden Kamuy Final Chapter (Season 5) Golden Kamuy, a masterpiece by Noda Satoru, depicts a survival battle for gold in Hokkaido during the Meiji period. It has been broadcast as an anime for four seasons since 2018, and was also well-received as a movie and a live-action drama in 2024.
The fourth season of the anime, which aired in 2023, begins with the main character, Sugimoto Saichi, and the Ainu girl, Asirpa, who had been separated, attempting to return to Hokkaido from Sakhalin. The story is full of highlights, including the appearance of Kaizoku Boutaro, one of the tattooed prisoners, and the intensifying battle for the Ainu gold.
At the final episode of the fourth season, the decision to produce the final chapter was announced at an event where the cast, including Sugimoto’s voice actor, Kobayashi Chikahiro, Asirpa’s voice actor, and Shiraishi Haruka, Shiraishi’s voice actor, and Shiraishi Yoshitake’s voice actor, Ito Kentaro, were all able to watch the show together.
Regarding the fifth season, no related information has been released for about two years since the visual of the enemy character Lieutenant “Tsurumi Atsushirou” sitting in a chair and smiling fearlessly was released. There are increasing voices of expectation on social media, such as “It’s the climax, so I want a godly drawing with enthusiasm,” and “It’s complicated because it’s going to be a hard development from here, but I want to see it soon”. By the way, it has been announced that the live-action version will be made in December 2024, and details of the sequel may be announced in both anime and live-action at some point.
“Sabikui Bisco” Season 2. The anime “Sabikui Bisco”, which aired in 2022, is based on the light novel of the same title by Shinji Nodokubo. Set in a future Japan where civilization has collapsed, the story follows the protagonist “Akaboshi Bisco” and the doctor “Nekoyanagi Miro”, who is trying to save his sister who has been eroded by rust, as they travel in search of “Sabikui”, a miraculous mushroom that purifies the rust that corrodes cities and life. In the final episode of the first season, Visco and Milo worked together to defeat the giant enemy “Kurokawa”, and Visco, who had become immortal, set out on a journey with Milo again to restore his body.
In the anime, Visco’s master, “Jabi,” and Milo’s sister, “Pau,” are saved from the threat of rust, leading to a happy ending. Still, since the original manga only ended with the first volume, there is great anticipation for the anime adaptation from the second volume onwards, which will depict new adventures.
The production of the second season was announced in the “Dengeki Bunko 30th Anniversary Special” to be broadcast in 2023, and a celebratory illustration of Visco and Milo holding their bows was also released. Two years have passed since then, and there is still no follow-up news, but there are also comments from fans who can’t wait, such as “I think I’ll read the original manga to show my support” and “I can’t wait, so I’m watching the first season again”.
