‘It’s come full circle, and it’s a legend.’ ‘It’s become a facial expression.’ It’s a classic anime whose poor drawing skills have become a joke.

The surreal collapse has led to it being called a “mystery.”

Huh? “Watermelon Reflux” and “The Angle is Weird” are anime that became a hot topic for their drawing failure (6 images). First, there is a scene where the drawing failure occurred in the TV anime “Yu-Gi-Oh ! Duel Monsters”, which is based on the manga by Kazuki Takahashi and is often used as a joke. One of the attractions of anime is that it can depict dynamism and facial expressions that cannot be expressed by manga or text alone. Many people pay attention to the quality of the drawings when watching. However, some works have attracted attention because of “drawing failure.”

Many people are familiar with it on social media, even if they have not seen it. The original work was serialized in “Weekly Shonen Jump” (Shueisha) and has been made into various media mixes, such as card games, TV games, and anime.

In “Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters”, the second anime adaptation of the same work, it was discussed that the characters’ jaws were longer than necessary in many scenes and that their facial features were distorted. Popular characters in the series, such as Kaiba Seto, who is handsome among fans, and Jonouchi Katsuya, who has a manly personality, were even said to be “fake faces.” Fans said, “It doesn’t look like the same character,” and “This is intentional, right?” In 2012, animation director Kagami Takahiro revealed on X (formerly Twitter) that he created these drawings by reading Takahashi’s original work and thinking, “This character seems to have this kind of personality so that I might do this.”

For example, Jonouchi is a hot-blooded prominent brother character → Maybe he likes martial arts → Maybe he likes pro wrestling → He likes Inoki → Ago!” Another series discussed as a joke for its poor animation is “DYNAMIC CHORD,” an anime adaptation of a girl’s game series by game and CD production company Asgard. The series, which began airing in October 2017, focuses on four bands, depicting the joy of band music and love stories between the band members.

The handsome men are captivating, but the frequent scenes of poor animation depicting backgrounds and objects are the subject of jokes. For example, in the fourth episode, known to fans as the “legendary episode,” there are some strange depictions, such as a seat belt extending from the roof of a car and a car driving around a Y-shaped intersection where it is unclear how it will proceed. Furthermore, in the scene where a watermelon is cooled in a river, it flows in the opposite direction to the river’s flow, and fans have made it a famous scene known as the “backflowing watermelon.”

The many scenes full of things to point out have instead evoked positive reactions. Some viewers have made it legendary, with comments such as “definitely a legendary anime,” “I’m laughing so much I could get facial paralysis,” and “I think this is the last strange work of the Heisei era.”
