‘Sea Folktale Anime’ Completed Even Though There Is No Sea!? Director Pays Courtesy Visit to Mayor of Kofu, Yamanashi Prefecture

An animation based on a folk tale from Kofu City, Yamanashi Prefecture, has been completed, and the people involved paid a courtesy visit to Kofu City Mayor Yuichi Higuchi.

The animation was produced by the Japan Folktale Association and the Nippon Foundation as part of the “Umi no Minwa no Town Project,” which passes on folk tales related to the sea from all over Japan to future generations.

In 2025, the folk tale “Genma Yabei and the Shark,” from Kofu City, was selected. On the 15th, upon the completion of the animation, director Shinnosuke Numata of the “Umi no Minwa no Town Project” and other people involved paid a courtesy visit to Mayor Yuichi Higuchi and handed him a DVD and a certificate of “Umi no Minwa no Town.”

After the animation was screened, Mayor Higuchi, who had watched it, said, “Folk tales are important cultural assets for the region. I would like to effectively use animation as a teaching material in libraries and schools.” The completed animation will be released on the official YouTube channel of the “Umi no Minwa no Town Project” from 10:00 a.m. on the 16th.
