The setting of the popular anime “A Place Further Than the Universe” is Antarctica. A post by X (Twitter), who has realized his dream of visiting this faraway place someday, has become a hot topic. I know the feeling of wanting to scream out loud.
“YoriMoi” (Further Than the Universe), produced by the anime production company Madhouse, was broadcast on AT-X, TOKYO MX, and other networks in 2018. The story follows the journey of four high school girls, including the main character, Tamaki Mari, to Antarctica.
It was so popular that it was rebroadcast on NHK Educational TV in January 2024. Gunte, whose hobby is traveling, was the one who aimed to set the stage for Yorimoi. Her passion is extraordinary, and she has traveled around the 88 temples of Shikoku, attempted to conquer the more than 400 inhabited remote islands in Japan, and even obtained a first-class small boat pilot’s license to destroy all the inhabited remote islands.
For more than 15 years, she has been making so-called “pilgrimages” to visit the settings of anime and manga, and her experiences are compiled in a doujinshi by the circle “Gunhack” she runs with her friends.

Embarking from Argentina due to an irrepressible feeling!
Gunte-san loves YoriMoi. Naturally, he had the option of featuring it in a doujinshi, but at the same time, he had a strong feeling that “I won’t write a doujinshi about YoriMoi unless I set foot on Antarctica.”
As a result, although it was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, he began to consider traveling to Antarctica in October 2023 seriously. He chose to visit Antarctica on a cruise ship from Argentina. However, airline troubles made it difficult even to enter Argentina. He also had to undergo health checks, and on December 30, 2024, he finally began his voyage to Antarctica.
They surpassed the “screaming 60 degrees” and successfully reached Antarctica!
As it is a cruise ship, the environment is comfortable. However, the problem is the outside environment itself. The intense natural environment hit the boat, also featured in the anime, such as “Roaring 40 degrees, Crazy 50 degrees, Screaming 60 degrees.” On the second day of the trip, the ship tilted “dangerously.”
However, once they passed 60 degrees south latitude, the weather improved. The journey continued, enjoying the floating icebergs and observing the penguins that live along the way. Finally, on January 4th local time, they landed in Antarctica. Gunte-san shouted, “Serves you right!” with a unique acrylic stand.
For more details about the journey, please look forward to “GUNHACK Vol.5 Yorimoi Special” by the circle “GUNHACK”!People who saw the post responded to this passionate pilgrimage with comments such as “Congratulations!” “A model for pilgrimages,” and “I want to give you my heartfelt applause and praise.”
Furthermore, Go Wakabayashi, who served as the music producer for the work, responded by saying, “I’m thrilled to have been able to participate as a music producer in a work that has the power to push people like this.” Gunte continued his voyage again and returned to Haneda on January 13. His Antarctic journey has been summarized on the note. Still, it will also be summarized in “GUNHACK Vol. 5 Yorimoi Special Edition,” published by the circle above “Gunhack” at the Summer Comic Market in 2025.
