Aoi Toda, a trend phenomenon watcher who studies youth culture and trends daily, thoroughly predicts the trends 2025 on this website.

Studies of youth trends have shown that nostalgia for the Heisei era resonates in a new way with today’s young people. Last year, the restart of popular works such as Ranma 1/2, Dragon Ball DIMA, and Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM became a hot topic, but many Heisei anime are scheduled to be remade in 2025.

Three works that are attracting attention are “Shin Samurai Den YAIBA,” “Hell Teacher Nube,” and “Gag Manga Biyori.” “YAIBA,” which is scheduled to be broadcast this spring, is a long-running manga serialized by Gosho Aoyama before “Detective Conan,” and the anime was broadcast for four seasons in 1993 as “Kenyuu Densetsu YAIBA.” Takayama Minami has been confirmed to continue playing the main character, “Kurogane Yaiba,” the other characters may be changed. Still, fans will be looking forward to the possibility of a collaboration with “Conan.”

“Hell Teacher Nube,” scheduled to be broadcast in July, is a school manga serialized in “Weekly Shonen Jump” in the 1990s, and the anime was broadcast at about the same time. Although it is set in an elementary school, it has a strong impression of being quite erotic. Still, each episode features a touching drama between teachers and students, and there are also school ghost stories, occults, monsters, and the classic Jump battle elements, which were the reasons for its popularity. The remake will be arranged in a modern style, but it will be interesting to see how the scenes considered problematic at the time will be adjusted.

Three reasons behind the increase in remakes
Gag Manga Biyori, scheduled to air in April, is a gag manga by Masuda Kosuke that began serialization in Monthly Shonen Jump in 1999 and is the first remake in 15 years.

The central staff has reunited, and we can sense their enthusiasm for delivering the same atmosphere and fun as back then. In addition, remakes of “Showa anime” such as “The Rose of Versailles,” “Fist of the North Star,” ” Cat’s Eye,” and “Anne of Green Gables” have been announced one after another, and this trend is likely to continue for a while.

There are three reasons behind the increase in remakes: “existing fans,” “ease of planning to get the project approved,” and “overseas distribution.” TV stations are fighting over new, popular original works, while original anime tends to struggle. In that respect, if a proven Heisei anime is remade, it will attract people in their 30s to 50s who enjoy it in real-time, and this demographic has high purchasing power, so stable profits can be expected. Another advantage is that past hits are well-known, so proposals to production committees and sponsors can be made more smoothly.

In addition, overseas distribution has become a new business pillar in recent years, and publishers of original works have begun to focus on digging up past works, strengthening the trend toward remakes. On the Internet, voices are predicting the “next remake,” such as “I think that ‘ Zatch Bell ‘ and ‘Yu Yu Hakusho’ are working behind the scenes,” “Since the drama version of ‘GTO’ with Takashi Sorimachi has been revived, an anime version is likely,” and “The drama ‘From Today, It’s My Turn!!’ was a huge success, but it has only been made into an anime OVA so that it would be perfect for a TV anime.” Past masterpieces revived in a new form will become a bridge connecting generations.
