The final episode of the 11th episode of the anime Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX ( GeQuax ) featured a surprise that blew fans away. The appearance of “that unit” and the sound of “that song” were a double shock that even those familiar with the series’ history would tremble at, engulfing fans.
In episode 11, Char Aznable (CV: Shin Yuki ) and Shuji Ito (CV: Tsuchiya Shinba ) clash over Lalah Sune, who sleeps within the “Rose of Sharon.” Shuji reveals part of his mysterious identity, saying, “I came from the other side. To end this world.” Then, emerging from the light was a silhouette that looked unmistakably like the original Gundam, a familiar sight to all.
“Zeequaxe” has been peppered with numerous homages up until now, but this moment wasn’t just a simple reference, but a powerful reminder of the very existence of the “official story.” Furthermore, at the end, instead of the usual Hoshimachi Suisei song “Mou Dou Namae Ii Ya,” there was a surprise performance of TM NETWORK’s classic “BEYOND THE TIME (Beyond the Mobius Universe).”
The revival of a song used in the 1988 film “Char’s Counterattack” in the latest Reiwa film has sparked an outpouring of praise online, with comments like “I got goosebumps the moment I heard the intro,” “The unexpected combination of the original and Char’s Counterattack music is unfair,” and “It brought me to tears.” “Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuX” is the latest installment in the “Mobile Suit Gundam” series, which began in 1979.
The story follows Amate Yuzuriha, a high school girl living a peaceful life in a space colony floating in space, who becomes embroiled in an illegal mobile suit dueling competition, Clan Battle, after meeting a young girl named Nyaan. The ending of the 11th episode is both nostalgic and refreshing. The appearance of the RX-78-2 and the “double whammy” of the Char’s Counterattack music create a strong impression that “Sieg Axe” is unmistakably “Gundam.”
The collaboration between Sunrise and Studio Khara, the creators of the “Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo” series, has generated a lot of buzz, and the theatrical release, which was released in January of this year ahead of the TV series, was a huge hit, grossing approximately 3.4 billion yen. It has been re-screened at 368 cinemas nationwide since June 20th, and a special event will be held at Anime Expo 2025, North America’s largest anime convention, demonstrating its popularity both domestically and internationally.
