November 24th is Akio Otsuka’s birthday. Akio Otsuka made his debut as a voice actor in the 1980s. At the 9th Seiyu Awards, he received the Toyama Kei Award, given to those who have popularized the voice acting profession through the media.
In 2024, he will appear in many titles, such as “Pon’s Path,” “The Fable,” and “Lord and Dog.” He will continue to play the leading role in works such as “PUI PUI Molcar The Movie MOLMAX,” “Nintama Rantaro the Movie: Dokutake Ninja Corps’ Strongest Strategist,” and “A Salaryman Goes to Another World and Becomes a Four Heavenly King.” He is also active in a wide range of media, including appearing in the second performance of the musical reading drama “READING HIGH Noir” and “THANATOS.”
So, Anime! Anime! Conducted a reader survey titled “Which character do you like the most out of the ones you have played?” to celebrate Akio Otsuka’s birthday, following on from last year. During the survey period from November 14th to November 17th, we received responses from 171 people.
The gender ratio was about 50% men, about 40% women, and about 10% no response, with slightly more men. The age group was 19 or younger (approximately 30 percent) and those in their 20s and 40s (roughly 25 percent each).
From the main character to rivals and animals, the list is complete! No. 1 is Solid Snake from Metal Gear Solid. With a support rate of about 15 percent, he has risen from second place last year to the top. “He has a hard-boiled, profound voice, and his catchphrase, “Sorry to keep you waiting,” is cool! He has a warm side to his dandy side, and his radio exchanges with his comrades are also a highlight,” and “He’s a skilled mercenary who is good at infiltrating enemy bases alone. His playfulness shines through in his masculinity, and I think it was a wonderful role that only Otsuka could play,” said Otsuka, who plays the main character in a popular game.
“He plays different Snakes in different works, but in each one, he leaves a memorable comment. I often imitated the line, “That’s good taste.” Second place is Black Jack from Black Jack. With an approval rating of about 11%, he has risen from third place last year. “His cool and calm voice, passionate thoughts about life, and cute exchanges with Pinoko are all great. Dr. BJ opened the door to my otaku world,” and “Otsuka’s intellectual acting brings out the charm of Black Jack.
I love that voice when he shouts his rage when asking for high medical fees!” He plays a genius surgeon who runs away from the shadows. He has also appeared in several Black Jack-related works, and some have commented, “I was surprised to see Otsuka doing a voice role in an important scene in the live-action drama version that aired this year.” Third place: Fukuchi Ouchi from Bungo Stray Dogs. With an approval rating of about 7%, he dropped from the top spot last year, but he remains in the top three. “He was once a hero on the battlefield, but behind the scenes, he is the head of a terrorist organization. His voice changed, and it gave me goosebumps.
His swordsmanship showdown with his best friend, Fukuzawa Yukichi, was also impressive. I was surprised when I found out his true purpose. “His dandy voice is the perfect match for a middle-aged character! I can’t imagine anyone else who would suit him better than Otsuka-san,” were some of the strong enemies who stand in the way of the main characters.
Here are some other comments! For Dokubo from “Mob Psycho 100,” “He’s an evil spirit with ambitions of becoming a god, but at heart, he’s caring and kind, and he builds a relationship of trust with Mob-kun. The scene moved me in season 3, where he realized he wanted a friend. Otsuka-san also adds color to the series with his narration and role as Psycho Helmet.” For Tsushima from “Ore, Tsushima,” “He’s a brave, dignified, yet cute, brown-tagged cat. I can see why the old man is obsessed!” For Moominpappa from “Moomin’s Family,” “He conveys Moominpappa’s humor, the sadness of an elder, and the unchanging boyish heart with a deep voice.
In the episode where Moomin’s joke makes Florence think she’s a princess, I laughed at his line, “I’m glad you didn’t call me a ballerina.” For Yamada Denzo from “Nintama Rantaro,” “I’ve loved Yamada-sensei since I was little. It’s wonderful that he inherited the role from his father, Otsuka Norio, and is bringing out the character’s charm. I’m looking forward to this year’s Nintama movie!” There were also votes for the title of the movie version of “Dokutake Ninja Tai’s Strongest Strategist,” which will be released on December 20th. In the 2024 edition, game characters came out on top. The results also featured villains who stand in the way of the protagonist and non-human characters.
