KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS has unveiled a new teaser key visual and promotional video for DEATH STRANDING ISOLATIONS, an upcoming original anime series inspired by the world of Hideo Kojima’s acclaimed video game franchise, DEATH STRANDING. Alongside the new footage, the studio confirmed that acclaimed Japanese novelist and screenwriter Tow Ubukata will handle the series composition and screenplay.
The announcement was made on October 30, 2026, during KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS’ 10th-anniversary celebration event, BEYOND THE STRAND: The Odyssey of Creation and Endeavor, held in Tokyo. The newly released teaser offers an early look at the anime’s mysterious atmosphere, while the key visual introduces a haunting image connected to the series’ central themes of isolation, loss, and human connection.
Directed by Takayuki Sano, the anime is being produced by E&H Production, the Japanese animation studio known for projects such as NINJA KAMUI and BULLET/BULLET. The series is scheduled to stream exclusively on Disney+ in 2027, with Disney+ Star branding used in the Japanese announcement.
DEATH STRANDING ISOLATIONS Tells an Original Story in the Same Universe
Rather than directly adapting the events of the original video games, DEATH STRANDING ISOLATIONS will introduce a completely new story set in the same fictional universe. The narrative takes place in North America after Sam Porter Bridges has reconnected the continent through the Chiral Network.
Although the world has begun rebuilding following the catastrophic events of the Death Stranding, reconnecting people does not necessarily solve every problem. The renewed connections bring unexpected consequences, and different survivors have their own ideas about how humanity should move forward.
The official synopsis introduces several characters whose lives have been shaped by the disaster. Among them are a young girl who has grown accustomed to living in isolation, a mysterious elderly man who attempts to connect people through an unusual method, a female soldier caught in a cycle of war, and a boy filled with anger toward the circumstances of his life.
The story places particular emphasis on a young girl who has gradually come to prefer solitude. Although her isolation was initially forced upon her by the circumstances surrounding the Death Stranding, she eventually begins rejecting opportunities for meaningful human relationships.
However, unexpected encounters may force her to reconsider the life she has chosen.
The official synopsis opens with the striking line, “My mom became a crater.” This unsettling statement hints at the devastating personal consequences of the Death Stranding and establishes the emotional tone of the series.
By following people whose experiences differ from Sam’s, the anime will explore another side of the franchise’s post-apocalyptic world.
Tow Ubukata Takes Charge of Series Composition and Screenplay
One of the biggest announcements is the addition of Tow Ubukata as the writer responsible for series composition and screenplay.
For viewers unfamiliar with anime production terminology, series composition refers to the overall structure of an anime’s story. The person in charge helps organize the narrative across episodes, develop the major story arcs, and ensure that the characters and plot progress consistently. The screenplay writer then works on the scripts that bring those story developments to life.
Ubukata is an established Japanese novelist and screenwriter whose work spans novels, video games, manga, and animation. He made his writing debut in 1996 with Kuroi Kisetsu (Black Season), which received the Gold Award at the first Sneaker Taisho Awards.
He later gained recognition for Mardock Scramble, which won the 24th Nihon SF Taisho Award in 2003. His historical novel Tenchi Meisatsu also received several literary awards in 2010, including the Booksellers’ Award (Honya Taisho).
His experience across different storytelling formats makes him a notable addition to a project that must translate the unusual atmosphere and philosophical themes of a video game universe into an animated narrative.
With Ubukata handling the story structure and screenplay, viewers can expect the anime to develop its own characters and narrative while remaining connected to the themes established by the original franchise.
Takayuki Sano Directs the Anime
Takayuki Sano will serve as the director of DEATH STRANDING ISOLATIONS. He will lead the production and guide the creative team in adapting the franchise’s distinctive atmosphere into an original animated series.
Sano also shared his thoughts about the project in an official comment.
Takayuki Sano (Director):
“One of the unique abilities of entertainment is its power to enhance the spirituality of those who consume it, and I think this is something that Mr. Kojima’s works have always achieved. As a result, I approached this production with an exceptionally strong sense of duty and responsibility. I knew that no matter what, I needed to accomplish the same thing.”
His statement highlights the importance of the philosophical and emotional ideas often associated with Hideo Kojima’s storytelling. Rather than focusing only on the science-fiction setting or dramatic events, the creative team also aims to explore deeper questions about humanity, relationships, and the meaning of connection.
E&H Production handles the Animation
The animation will be produced by E&H Production, a Japanese studio that has worked on titles including NINJA KAMUI, BULLET/BULLET, and the television series Magic Knight Rayearth.
One particularly interesting detail is that DEATH STRANDING ISOLATIONS will use traditional, hand-drawn 2D animation. This gives the series a different visual approach from the realistic 3D presentation of the original games.
The character designs are credited to Ilya Kuvshinov, who is known for his work on Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045. His involvement adds another recognizable creative name to the production team.
The decision to use hand-drawn animation could help the series establish its own visual identity while retaining the eerie landscapes, emotional atmosphere, and unusual imagery associated with the DEATH STRANDING universe.
What Makes This Anime Different from the Games?
The original DEATH STRANDING introduced players to a devastated world in which mysterious supernatural events had broken down civilization and separated communities. Players followed Sam Porter Bridges as he travelled across dangerous landscapes, delivering supplies and reconnecting isolated settlements through the Chiral Network.
The franchise’s central ideas include loneliness, cooperation, survival, and the importance of human relationships.
DEATH STRANDING ISOLATIONS will revisit those ideas through a different group of characters. Instead of simply following the familiar journey of Sam, the anime will explore how other survivors respond to a world that is attempting to rebuild itself.
Its setting also creates an interesting narrative possibility: even after people have been reconnected, they may not agree on what connection should mean or whether it is always desirable.
This allows the series to explore the consequences of rebuilding society from perspectives that have not been at the centre of the games.
Release Date and Streaming Details
DEATH STRANDING ISOLATIONS is scheduled to begin streaming exclusively on Disney+ in 2027. The Japanese announcement specifically refers to Disney+ Star.
An exact premiere date, episode count, voice cast, and complete release schedule have not yet been announced. More information is expected as the production moves closer to its release.
With Tow Ubukata joining as series composer and screenwriter, Takayuki Sano directing, and E&H production handling the animation, DEATH STRANDING ISOLATIONS is bringing together an experienced creative team for a new chapter in Hideo Kojima’s fictional universe.
The decision to tell an original story rather than simply adapt the games gives the anime an opportunity to explore different characters and perspectives. Its hand-drawn 2D animation also promises a visual identity distinct from the games.
The newly released teaser provides only an early glimpse, but its mysterious imagery and emotional premise suggest that the series will continue exploring the franchise’s central themes of isolation, loss, and human connection.
Anime and game fans will have to wait until 2027 to discover how this new story expands the world of DEATH STRANDING.
