Black has always been one of the most striking colors in anime. It can represent mystery, power, elegance, darkness, rebellion, danger, or even loneliness. Some characters wear black from head to toe, while others are connected to the color through their abilities, organizations, personalities, or dramatic visual designs.
To celebrate Black Day on September 6, Anime! Anime! once again asked readers which anime or game character they most strongly associate with the color black. The 2026 poll produced an interesting result: the entire top three is made up of characters connected to the protagonist as enemies or rivals, although their personalities and roles are very different.
The biggest winner this year is Ryunosuke Akutagawa from Bungo Stray Dogs, who climbed from third place in 2025 to take the No. 1 position in 2026. Meanwhile, newcomer Cure Arcana Shadow/Ruruka Mori from Star Detective Precure! made an especially impressive debut at No. 2.
Here is a closer look at the 2026 ranking.
What Is Black Day in Japan?
September 6 is known in Japan as “Black Day” (Kuro no Hi) because the Japanese pronunciation of the numbers 9 and 6 can be read as “ku-ro,” forming the word kuro, meaning “black.”
The day was established by the Kyoto Black Dyeing Industry Cooperative Association to promote traditional black-dyeing culture and the use of black formal clothing, including black crested kimono and formal black kimono.
Anime! Anime! used the occasion to revisit one of its annual reader surveys: “Which character has black as their image color?”
The 2026 survey was conducted from August 26 to September 2, 2026, and received 232 responses. Approximately 55 percent of respondents were male, and 45 percent were female. Around 40 percent were under 19, while people in their 30s accounted for approximately 35 percent of the respondents.
The survey is intended to measure readers’ current interest in anime characters and works. It is not meant to establish an absolute ranking of which character is “better” than another.

Ryunosuke Akutagawa takes first place with approximately 7 percent of the votes.
This is a significant improvement from last year’s survey, when Akutagawa ranked third. His victory makes sense from a visual perspective: the character is almost inseparable from his long black coat and the dark, dangerous image surrounding his ability.
Akutagawa is a member of the Port Mafia, one of the most powerful criminal organizations in Yokohama. He is known for his ruthless personality, exceptional combat ability, and intense rivalry with protagonist Atsushi Nakajima.
His ability, Rashomon, is especially important to his black-themed image. His black coat can transform into a monstrous, blade-like entity capable of attacking and defending in highly unpredictable ways.
That connection between his costume and supernatural ability was one of the reasons readers voted for him.
One reader highlighted how Rashomon transforms Akutagawa’s black coat into a black beast, while another pointed out the visual contrast between Akutagawa and Atsushi: Atsushi is associated with a white tiger, making Akutagawa’s black aesthetic stand out even more.
The relationship between the two characters has also become an important part of the appeal. Their combined technique, Moonlight Beast: Rashomon, demonstrates how their opposing abilities can work together despite their complicated relationship.
Akutagawa’s design therefore represents more than simply the color black. His black coat, dark ability, harsh personality, and complicated relationship with Atsushi all reinforce the same visual identity.
That combination helped him move from third place to No. 1 in 2026.
- Cure Arcana Shadow / Ruruka Mori Star Detective Precure!
Cure Arcana Shadow ranks second with approximately 6 percent of the vote, making her the biggest surprise of this year’s ranking.
Unlike most characters in the top 10, Cure Arcana Shadow comes from an anime that only began airing in 2026. Her immediate appearance near the top of the poll demonstrates how strongly her character design and role have connected with viewers.
Star Detective Precure! is the 23rd entry in the long-running Precure franchise. Cure Arcana Shadow is the mysterious identity of Ruruka Mori, a girl who is both a Pretty Cure and a member of the phantom-thief group Phantom.
That unusual position is a major part of her appeal.
Rather than being introduced as a straightforward heroic Pretty Cure, Ruruka initially operates from the opposite side of the story. Her black costume, gothic-inspired design, mysterious personality,y and connection to the Phantom group immediately distinguish her from the brighter designs traditionally associated with the franchise.
Readers specifically praised her as a stylish “black Cure”, comparing her visual appeal with previous black-themed Pretty Cure characters such as the original Cure Black.
From Cure Arcana Shadow to Cure Arcana
There is also an important development that makes her 2026 ranking even more interesting.
On August 30, 2026, Episode 31 of Star Detective Precure! revealed Ruruka’s transformation into Cure Arcana. Unlike Cure Arcana Shadow, whose design emphasizes black and mystery, Cure Arcana has a predominantly white appearance.
This creates a striking black-and-white contrast within the same character.
Voice actress Nao Toyama explained that the character’s image colors had been listed as “black/white” from the audition stage, meaning the color change had been planned from early in production. She initially approached Ruruka as a cool, mysterious, and emotionally restrained character because of her role as an apparent enemy.
The transformation also gives the character a new symbolic dimension: black was associated with the mysterious Cure Arcana Shadow, while white represents her new identity as Cure Arcana.
That development makes her second-place result particularly fascinating because readers were voting for a character whose identity was already beginning to evolve.
- Gin Detective Conan
Gin from Detective Conan takes third place with approximately 5 percent of the votes.
Although he has dropped from first place in last year’s survey, Gin remains one of the most recognizable “black” characters in anime.
Gin is a high-ranking member of the Black Organization, the criminal group pursued by Conan Edogawa throughout Detective Conan. He is one of the organization’s most dangerous members and is feared even by some of his own colleagues.
His visual design is almost a perfect representation of the theme.
Gin normally appears in a black hat and long black coat, creating a silhouette that immediately communicates danger and mystery. His long silver hair provides a sharp contrast against the dark clothing, making his appearance even more distinctive.
Readers specifically pointed to this contrast when explaining why Gin remains strongly associated with black.
Another major reason for his popularity in this poll is his importance to the series’ central mystery. Gin was directly involved in the incident that forced Shinichi Kudo to take the drug that transformed him into Conan Edogawa.
Even though practically all members of the Black Organization are associated with dark clothing, Gin remains the character who most strongly embodies the organization’s intimidating image.
He may have fallen from No. 1 to No. 3 this year, but his continued presence in the top three proves that Gin’s iconic black design remains extremely powerful.
- Homura Akemi Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Homura Akemi shares fourth place with Tetsuro Kuroo.
Homura has long been one of the most recognizable dark-themed magical-girl characters in anime. Her long black hair, dark eyes, and generally serious personality immediately distinguish her from many of the brighter magical-girl characters around her.
Her visual identity also changes dramatically throughout Puella Magi Madoka Magica, but black remains an important part of her character design.
Her popularity is particularly timely in 2026 because Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie -Walpurgisnacht: Rising- opened in Japanese theaters on August 28, 2026. The film is the direct sequel to Rebellion and brings back the franchise’s major creative team, including chief director Akiyuki Shinbo, scriptwriter Gen Urobuchi, and original character designer Ume Aoki, with animation by SHAFT.
The new movie gives fans another opportunity to see Homura in a completely new situation, making her appearance in this year’s black-character ranking especially appropriate.
- Tetsuro Kuroo Haikyu!!
Also tied for fourth is Tetsuro Kuroo from Haikyu!!.
Kuroo’s messy black hair and confident personality make him immediately recognizable. As the captain of Nekoma High’s volleyball team, he is clever, composed, and often playful, creating a different interpretation of the “black” character archetype.
Unlike Akutagawa or Gin, Kuroo isn’t defined by darkness or villainy. His inclusion demonstrates that the survey isn’t simply about evil characters.
For some fans, black is simply the color that best matches a character’s appearance and overall visual identity.
- Sebastian Michaelis Black Butler
Sebastian Michaelis takes sixth place.
As the elegant but dangerous demon butler serving Ciel Phantomhive, Sebastian is almost synonymous with black formalwear.
His classic black butler’s suit, gloves,s and polished appearance give him an unmistakable visual identity. At the same time, his supernatural abilities and calm demeanor create the mysterious atmosphere that many readers associate with black-themed characters.
The contrast between his impeccable manners and his frightening capabilities is one of the reasons Sebastian has remained popular for so long.
- Kirito Sword Art Online
Kirito shares seventh place with Diablo.
The protagonist of Sword Art Online is famously associated with his black swordsman appearance.
His black coat and sword-based fighting style became particularly iconic during the early Sword Art Online story, helping establish the visual image of Kirito as the “Black Swordsman.”
Kirito is another example of why the survey’s definition of “black character” is broader than simply villainous characters.

Diablo is known as Noir, one of the primordial demons, and his black formal suit, dark hair,ir and red-and-gold accents perfectly match his intimidating personality.
Despite his overwhelming power, Diablo is also extremely loyal to Rimuru Tempest. That combination of elegance, strength,gth and absolute devotion has made him one of the franchise’s most memorable characters.
- Nagisa Misumi / Cure Black Futari wa Pretty Cure
At No. 9 is Nagisa Misumi, better known as Cure Black.
Cure Black is one of the foundational characters of the Precure franchise and remains one of the most recognizable black-themed Pretty Cures.
Her inclusion is particularly notable because Cure Black helped establish the idea that black could be used as a heroic color in a magical-girl franchise.
Rather than representing evil, her black costume represents strength, confidence,ence and determination.

Zenkaiser Black, the Kaito Goshikida version from Avataro Sentai Donbrothers, ranks at No. 10.

Kyoichiro Yozakura also ranks at No. 10.
As the oldest Yozakura sibling, Kyoichiro has a cool and intimidating presence that fits the survey’s black-themed category.

One survey respondent pointed out that Zero’s cape and commanding presence can make him look almost like a final boss, despite being the protagonist.
That is an important part of Lelouch’s appeal: he deliberately adopts a mysterious and intimidating appearance while using intelligence and charisma to lead a rebellion.
His character design perfectly demonstrates how black can blur the line between hero and villain.
Why Are So Many “Black” Characters Villains or Rivals?
One of the most interesting things about this year’s results is the dominance of antagonistic or rival characters near the top.
Akutagawa, Cure ArcShadowhado,w and Gin all have strong connections to the protagonist’s opposition, although Cure Arcana Shadow’s story has since developed in a different direction.
This is not surprising from a visual storytelling perspective.
Black is frequently used in anime character design to communicate:

A black outfit can make a character appear more intimidating before they even speak.

For Cure Black, it represents heroic strength. For Kirito, it became part of the “Black Swordsman” identity. For Lelouch, it represents his theatrical alter ego Zero. And for Kuroo, it is primarily connected to his visual design and personality.
Cure Arcana Shadow Makes the Biggest Impact in 2026
Among all the results, Cure Arcana Shadow’s second-place finish may be the most surprising.
She comes from a brand-new 2026 anime, yet she managed to outperform characters who have been popular for decades.
Her position also became more interesting after the story revealed her transformation into Cure Arcana, changing her visual identity from black to white. The development was not merely a costume change: the character’s role in the story also shifted as Ruruka’s motivations and past became clearer.
That means the character who ranked second in a survey specifically about black image colors has already undergone a major color-based transformation within the same year.
It is a particularly fitting twist for a character from a detective-themed Pretty Cure series, where appearances and hidden identities are central to the story.
Akutagawa’s Rise to No. 1 Is Another Major Talking Point
The other major story behind this year’s ranking is Akutagawa’s rise.
He was third in the previous survey, but moved to first place in 2026. His combination of black clothing, the Rashomon ability,y and his complicated relationship with Atsushi gives him several layers of connection to the theme.
His black coat is not simply an accessory. It is directly connected to his supernatural power, meaning that his character design and fighting style reinforce each other.
That is probably one of the strongest examples in the ranking of a character whose costume, ability, ty and personality all communicate the same visual idea.
The 2026 “Which character has black as their image color?” survey shows just how flexible the color black can be in anime.
At the top of the ranking, Ryunosuke Akutagawa represents the dangerous and mysterious side of black. Cure Arcana Shadow represents gothic elegance, secrecy, and the unusual idea of a Pretty Cure operating alongside a phantom-thief group. Gin represents the classic image of a dangerous criminal dressed entirely in black.
Further down the ranking, however, the meaning changes.
Homura Akemi represents tragedy and mystery, Kuroo represents cool confidence, Sebastian represents elegant supernatural danger, Kirito represents the iconic black swordsman, and Cure Black proves that black can be just as heroic as it is intimidating.
The 2026 results therefore aren’t simply a list of characters who wear black clothes. They show how anime creators use color as a visual storytelling tool.
And with Star Detective Precure! continuing its story and Puella Magi Madoka Magica -Walpurgisnacht: Rising- now in theaters in Japan, two of the most talked-about black-themed characters in this year’s ranking are still evolving.
