The summer 2026 anime season is finally coming to a close, and once again, viewers have been treated to a wide variety of memorable characters. Among them, male characters with striking designs, powerful abilities, unique personalities, and unexpected sides have attracted plenty of attention.
When it comes to anime’s most appealing “handsome men,” appearance is only part of the equation. Some characters are attractive because of their overwhelming strength and confidence. Others become even more charming because their serious personalities contrast with unexpectedly cute behavior. Then some characters appear perfect at first glance but reveal eccentric, suspicious, or downright unfortunate personalities as the story progresses.
That variety is one of the most enjoyable parts of following anime characters. A character may initially catch your attention because of his design, but it is often the personality, relationships, growth, and unexpected reactions that make fans truly fall in love with him.
With that in mind, let’s look back at three male characters from the summer 2026 anime season who represent three completely different types of “handsome”: Toshiro Hitsugaya from BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War – The Calamity, Chuuya Nakahara from Bungo Stray Dogs Wan! 2, and Yorishige Suwa from The Elusive Samurai Season 2.
“He’s grown up so much…!” Toshiro Hitsugaya Shows His Completed Bankai in BLEACH
Let’s begin with the classic definition of an anime “handsome man”: a character who is cool, powerful, and capable of dominating the battlefield.
That character is Toshiro Hitsugaya from BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War – The Calamity.
Hitsugaya is the captain of the 10th Division of the Gotei 13 and is regarded as a prodigy among Soul Reapers. His small stature and youthful appearance often make him look much younger than the other captains. However, his personality is completely different from what his appearance might suggest.
He is serious, disciplined, intelligent, and highly responsible. Despite being one of the youngest captains, Hitsugaya carries himself with the authority expected of a veteran commander. That contrast between his childlike appearance and mature personality has been one of the character’s biggest attractions since the beginning of BLEACH.
During the Thousand-Year Blood War, however, fans were given an even more dramatic side of Hitsugaya.
In his battle against Gerard Valkyrie, Hitsugaya reaches the completed form of his Bankai, Daiguren Hyōrinmaru. The transformation produces one of the most visually striking moments of his story. As the power of his completed Bankai manifests, Hitsugaya’s body matures, turning the normally youthful captain into a tall young man.
For longtime BLEACH fans, seeing the adult version of Hitsugaya animated was a major payoff.
The transformation is not simply a change in appearance. His completed Bankai demonstrates just how dangerous his ice-based abilities can become. Hitsugaya is able to freeze enormous targets and manipulate ice on a scale that highlights why he has long been considered one of the most talented Soul Reapers of his generation.
The anime adaptation makes the moment even more memorable through its presentation and voice acting. Romi Park continues to portray the younger Hitsugaya, while Yuki Kaji voices his mature form. The casting choice adds another layer to the transformation because viewers can hear the difference in Hitsugaya’s presence as his appearance and power change.
For fans who have followed Hitsugaya for years, the scene carries a strong sense of nostalgia. The character who once appeared as a young and inexperienced captain has now reached a point where his incredible abilities can stand alongside some of the most powerful figures in the series.
His appeal therefore comes from more than just his good looks. He combines intelligence, responsibility, character growth, spectacular abilities, and an unforgettable transformation.
In other words, Hitsugaya delivers the classic “cool handsome guy” experience at full power.
In the Main Story He’s Cool, but in Bungo Stray Dogs Wan! Chuuya Is Simply Too Cute
If Hitsugaya represents the powerful and elegant type of handsome character, Chuuya Nakahara represents something completely different.
Chuuya is one of the most recognizable characters in Bungo Stray Dogs. He is an executive of the Port Mafia and one of the series’ strongest ability users. His ability, Upon the Tainted Sorrow, allows him to manipulate gravity, making him an extremely dangerous fighter.
His design also immediately makes an impression.
Chuuya’s short stature, distinctive hat, stylish clothing, red hair, and confident attitude give him a memorable appearance. He is quick-tempered, outspoken, and never afraid to confront his opponents. In serious situations, he can be intimidating and incredibly dependable.
His complicated relationship with Osamu Dazai makes him even more interesting.
The two were once partners known as Double Black, and although they constantly argue and insult each other, they possess an extraordinary level of understanding when working together. Their relationship is one of the most entertaining combinations in Bungo Stray Dogs because neither character is willing to admit how much they rely on the other.
But then Bungo Stray Dogs Wan! takes this already popular character and completely changes the atmosphere.
Instead of focusing primarily on Chuuya’s dangerous side, Wan! presents him in a much lighter and more comedic setting. His exaggerated reactions and interactions with the other characters reveal an unexpectedly adorable side.
His reactions to Dazai are particularly entertaining.
Dazai’s constant teasing can quickly push Chuuya’s buttons, causing him to lose his composure and react dramatically. The result is a character who can look incredibly cool one moment and completely adorable the next.
That contrast is exactly what makes Chuuya so appealing.
In the main Bungo Stray Dogs storyline, he is someone you can imagine standing calmly in the middle of a dangerous battle. In Wan!, he can become the character whose exaggerated reactions generate some of the biggest laughs.
The appeal comes from the gap.
Fans already know how capable Chuuya is, so seeing him become flustered, irritated, or unexpectedly cute makes those moments even more enjoyable. Without the serious atmosphere of the main series, viewers get to appreciate another side of his personality.
This makes Chuuya a perfect example of the “cool but secretly adorable” type of handsome character.
He does not need to lose his strength or charisma to become cute. Instead, Wan! simply changes the situation around him and allows that hidden side to come forward.
Handsome, Mysterious, and Just a Little Suspicious: Yorishige Suwa of The Elusive Samurai
Finally, we have a very different kind of handsome character: Yorishige Suwa from The Elusive Samurai.
At first glance, Yorishige appears to have everything fans might expect from a charismatic anime character. He has a distinctive face, long hair, an elegant appearance, a mysterious atmosphere, and the voice of Yuichi Nakamura.
He is also an important figure in the story.
Yorishige is a Shinto priest associated with the Suwa Grand Shrine and serves as an important ally and mentor to Hojo Tokiyuki, the young heir who survives the fall of the Kamakura shogunate.
The official story description presents Yorishige as the person who takes Tokiyuki’s hand after the destruction of Kamakura and helps him escape. From there, Tokiyuki reaches Suwa territory, where he begins gathering allies and preparing for the struggle ahead.
Yorishige’s mysterious nature is one of his strongest characteristics.
He possesses the ability to glimpse the future, which gives him an almost supernatural presence. He often speaks and behaves as though he knows much more than the people around him.
That should make him seem like a perfectly composed and wise mentor.
But there is a catch.
Yorishige can also be extremely eccentric.
His enthusiastic behavior, unusual expressions, unpredictable reactions, and occasionally suspicious actions can destroy the serious image he creates at first.
One moment, he looks like a mysterious spiritual leader who understands the destiny of the entire region.
The next moment, viewers may find themselves wondering, “What exactly is this man doing?”
That contrast is what makes Yorishige so entertaining.
His relationship with Tokiyuki is particularly important. Yorishige recognizes Tokiyuki’s potential and understands that the young lord’s unusual ability to escape and survive can become a powerful weapon.
Rather than forcing Tokiyuki into the traditional image of a warrior who must always stand and fight, Yorishige embraces the boy’s unique strengths.
This creates one of the most unusual mentor-student relationships in recent historical anime.
Yorishige can be serious when the situation demands it, but he can also become overly enthusiastic and surprisingly emotional. His behavior sometimes makes him seem less like an untouchable “living god” and more like an eccentric human being who genuinely cares about Tokiyuki.
Yuichi Nakamura’s voice performance adds another layer to the character. His calm and attractive voice makes Yorishige sound dignified during serious moments, which makes his more ridiculous scenes even funnier.
That is why Yorishige belongs in the “handsome but slightly unfortunate” category.
He has the face.
He has the voice.
He has the mysterious aura.
He has supernatural abilities.
But his personality makes it impossible to treat him as a completely flawless handsome character.
And that is precisely why he is so lovable.
The second season of The Elusive Samurai became one of the notable summer 2026 anime sequels, returning with CloverWorks and bringing Yorishige back into the continuing story of Tokiyuki’s struggle. The second season premiered in July 2026 and continued the historical adventure after the events of the first season.
Three Handsome Characters, Three Completely Different Charms
It is interesting that the word “handsome” can describe such completely different characters.
Toshiro Hitsugaya represents overwhelming power, maturity, and dramatic character growth. His completed Bankai and adult transformation gave longtime BLEACH fans a moment they had been waiting years to see.
Chuuya Nakahara represents the irresistible gap between coolness and cuteness. He can be a terrifying Port Mafia executive in the main story, but Bungo Stray Dogs Wan! allows viewers to enjoy his more comedic and adorable personality.
Yorishige Suwa, meanwhile, represents the handsome character who is difficult to completely understand. His elegant appearance and impressive voice suggest a serious and mysterious figure, but his eccentric personality makes him far more entertaining than a conventional “perfect” character.
And that is ultimately why anime character popularity cannot be measured by appearance alone.
A great character needs something that makes viewers remember him.
Sometimes it is a spectacular transformation.
Sometimes it is a funny reaction.
Sometimes it is an unusual personality that makes fans laugh every time the character appears on screen.
The best characters often combine several of these qualities.
Hitsugaya makes viewers think, “He’s become so powerful.”
Chuuya makes viewers think, “He’s so cute despite being so cool.”
And Yorishige makes viewers think, “He’s handsome… but why is he like this?”
That variety is one of the reasons anime fandom is so much fun.
The summer 2026 anime season offered plenty of action, comedy, drama, romance, and fantasy, but its memorable male characters once again proved that being “handsome” is about much more than having a good face.
Sometimes the coolest character is the strongest person in the room.
Sometimes the coolest character is the one having the funniest reaction.
And sometimes the most lovable handsome man is the suspicious-looking mentor who keeps doing something completely unexpected.
That is the charm of anime characters: just when you think you understand them, they show you another side—and give you another reason to become a fan.
