The ‘American Music Awards (AMA), one of the top three popular music awards in the United States, has newly established the K-Pop Artist Award.
AMA announced on the 13th (local time) that it would award a new ‘Favorite K-Pop Artist’ category while unveiling the nominees for each of the 37 types of the 2022 awards ceremony.
The organizers listed five teams as nominees for the award (in alphabetical order): Black Pink, BTS, Seventeen, TOMORROW X TOGETHER, and TWICE. In addition, BTS was also nominated for ‘Favorite Pop Duo/Group’ in this category. BTS competes with Coldplay, Imagine Dragons, Moneskin, and One Republic for the Pop Duo/Group Award.
AMA is a prestigious famous music awards ceremony that began in 1974. Since fan votes decide the winners, it is considered an awards ceremony showing popularity. At last year’s awards ceremony, BTS won the grand prize, defeating prominent pop stars.
AMA is the first to create a K-pop category among the three major American music awards, including the Grammy Awards and the Billboard Music Awards. AMA has divided awards into general pop, country, hip-hop, rhythm and blues (R&B), Latin, rock, gospel, and dance/electronic music genres.
Billboard, a music media outlet, evaluated it as “a groundbreaking measure for K-Pop.”
The Grammys are awarded in 86 categories and four prominent awards, including Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Rookie of the Year. Billboard also selects winners in over 60 categories, including genre categories and general categories, such as top artists.
Among the significant awards, excluding the three major music awards in the US, the US MTV Video Music Awards (VMA) and the European music awards ‘MTV EMA’ are awarding the ‘Best E-Pop’ category.
Meanwhile, Bad Bunny is the main character who received the most nominations for this year’s AMA, which will be held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles (LA) on the 20th of next month. He has been named in eight categories. Beyonce, Drake, and Taylor Swift were nominated for six nominations side by side. Adele, Bad Bunny, Beyonce, Drake, Harry Styles, Taylor Swift, and The Weeknd compete for the Grand Prize Artist of the Year.
