Japanese anime film ‘Chainsaw Man’ tops weekend box office in South Korea

According to a tally released by the Korea Film Council on the 13th, the Japanese anime film “Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc” attracted approximately 324,000 viewers over the weekend of the 10th to the 12th, taking the top spot in the weekend box office rankings.

The film was released in South Korea on September 24 and has attracted a total of over 1.836 million viewers.

The Korean film “Boss,” released on the 3rd of this month, the first day of the Chuseok holiday (August 15 on the lunar calendar), had maintained its top spot at the box office but has since fallen to second place, with approximately 307,000 viewers. The total number of viewers has now surpassed 2 million, with about 2,036,000 viewers.

Coming in third place was director Park Chan-wook’s new film “Hadakanai” (released September 24), which attracted around 186,000 viewers. The total number of viewers has now surpassed 2.36 million.

In terms of advance ticket sales, “Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc” is also leading the way with 28.4% as of 9 a.m. on the 13th. In second place is “Jujutsu Kaisen: The Movie Compilation – The Ball-Breaking Series,” a Japanese anime film set for release on the 16th, with 10.6%.

Following the release of “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Castle Arc Chapter 1 – Akaza Returns,” which became the third film released in South Korea this year to attract a cumulative audience of 5 million, Japanese anime theatrical releases, which already have large fan bases, are making significant strides.
