The author of Kagurabachi explains how his popular manga was influenced by one of the most successful shonen manga ever.
One of Shueisha’s more recent manga series, Kagurabachi, is fast becoming well-known. Takeru Hokazono, the manga’s creator, recently spoke with Asahi Shimbun in an interview. He discussed the other inspirations behind its well-known work in the interview as well as what most motivated him.
The author revealed that a different cherished shonen manga served as his inspiration for becoming a mangaka. He attributes his pursuit of a career in the manga industry to Naruto.
Masashi Kishimoto is the author and illustrator of the well-known manga series Naruto. It’s also among the most well-known anime series worldwide, having come to represent the genre as a whole. Before Naruto Shippuden came to an end in 2017, it had captured the hearts of fans for eighteen years, starting in 1999.
Kagurabachi is rising to the top of the shonen genre, much like Naruto did. When the manga was originally published in 2023, it became an instant smash. Taking the place of well-known series like Jujutsu Kaisen, My Hero Academia, and Black Clover, it managed to rank among the top three manga on Manga Plus.
Regarding the increasing fame that Kagurabachi is receiving, Hokazono said, “At first, I was scared.” It was being seen by so many people all of a sudden that I was frightened to make an episode every week. But I’m happy that more people now genuinely think well of me.
Hokazono also disclosed that he enjoys watching the John Wick films. His passion for intense action movies is evident in the expertly staged battle scenes in Kagurabachi. He said that he was an admirer of international films and listed David Fincher, Christopher Nolan, and Quentin Torrentino as his three favorite directors.
Saying, “When I draw, I keep in mind that I want to be able to draw pictures that aren’t in my drawer,” he also shared his method and self-motivation. I want to be able to create images that inspire me when I draw.
Many people throughout the world are praising the author’s work and are expecting that the manga will be adapted into an anime. This manga continues to keep its position as one of the most read titles on Manga Plus. It’s his third manga; the previous two were one-shots called “Roku no Pact” and “Farewell!! Cherry Boy!”
Along with the exquisite artwork, Hokazono’s work is notable for its retribution-related topic. The major theme of his one-shots was revenge, and Kagurabachi is similarly a story of revenge. The main character is Chihiro, whose father was a swordsmith and was assassinated by a group of individuals seeking a unique sword. Chihiro claimed the sword as his own after his father passed away and vowed to get revenge.
