August 30th is Adventurer’s Day. In 1965, the team of Doshisha University’s South American Andes and Amazon expedition successfully challenged a boat trip down the Amazon River. In 1970, Naoki Uemura successfully climbed Mount McKinley alone. In 1989, Kenichi Horie made a solo round trip across the Pacific Ocean in a small yacht, making it a day associated with adventure.
Many characters in anime take on adventures. The reasons for their adventures vary from character to character, whether to find hidden treasures they’ve never seen before, defeat their parents’ enemies, or fulfill a promise to a loved one. So Anime! Anime! I conducted a reader survey titled “What is the most adventurous character?” and followed up from last year. During the survey period from August 19th to August 22nd, 93 people responded.
The gender ratio was about 40 percent male, about 55 percent female, and about 5 percent did not answer, so there were more females. The age group was mainly young people, about 40 percent under 19 years old and about 25 percent in their 20s.
A gathering of fearless protagonists! No. 1 was Monkey D. Luffy from “One Piece.” With a support rate of about 25 percent, he was at the top for the third consecutive year. Luffy is the protagonist who continues his journey to find the One Piece treasure to become the Pirate King. Readers have commented, “Regarding adventure characters, Luffy is the one. As he continues his adventure, he gains more and more companions, and the Straw Hat Pirates finally have a large group of 10 people.
The captain who cares about his companions is excellent!” and “It’s exciting to see him sailing around the world to become the Pirate King. He’s always thinking about adventure and tends to make his companions go crazy, but when it comes down to it, he’s the most reliable man.” He is a curious character who is pushing forward toward his dreams.
The TV anime is celebrating its 25th anniversary, and its momentum shows no sign of slowing down. Satoshi from Pokémon came in second place. His approval rating was about 8 percent. Satoshi, who dreams of becoming a Pokémon Master, was the main character of the TV anime “Pokémon” from 1997 to 2023.
“Because he traveled to various regions with his partner Pikachu. Watching Satoshi’s adventures gave me courage,” and “It was cool to see Satoshi and Pikachu going on another journey in the final episode. I’m sure they’re still adventuring somewhere,” said the main character, who is forever engraved in the hearts of fans, and has once again made it to the top this year. 3rd place: Senku Ishigami from “Dr. Stone,” Gon from “HUNTER×HUNTER,” Frieren from “Furier of the Dead,” Ryza from “Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout,” and Riko from “Made in Abyss.” Five characters are tied for first place.
In this survey, the top three have one thing in common: they are the main characters. Titles with multiple series such as “Dr. Stone,” “Hunter x Hunter,” and “Made in Abyss” also stand out, and it seems that many readers are impressed by the long adventure journey. Here are some other comments! Bell Cranel from “Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?” is “A super rookie who only became an adventurer six months ago. In the first episode, he immediately takes a dangerous action, and Eina, a guild employee, tells him, ‘Adventurers shouldn’t go on adventures.'” Indy J from “Yo-kai Watch” is “A character that parodies the monumental adventure movie. I first learned about movies in elementary school through this character.”
Fumiduki Kai from “Tsukiuta.” is “An idol who used to work as a jack-of-all-trades. Many of her jobs after her debut, such as living on a deserted island and exploring remote areas, make you wonder, ‘Is that an idol’s job?’ Her open-mindedness and ability to accept anything are amazing.” Son Goku from Dragon Ball was also voted for, with the comment, “When you think of Son Goku, you think of battle, but it all started with a great adventure to find the Dragon Balls, which grant wishes when seven are collected!” The protagonist of the popular series, the latest of which is Dragon Ball DAIMA, will begin airing in October 2024. The adventures occur in various locations, including the sea, dungeons, holes, and other worlds. The results are a lineup of fearless characters, both male and female.
