Girl group BLACKPINK became the first K-pop girl group to be nominated for the Brit Awards, the UK’s most prestigious pop music awards ceremony.
According to YG Entertainment, on the 13th, BLACKPINK was nominated for the ‘International Group of the Year’ category at the ‘Brit Awards.’ BLACKPINK competes with Drake and 21 Savage, who collaborated on the album ‘Her Loss,’ which reached No. 1 on the US Billboard main album chart ‘Billboard 200’, and Swedish folk duo First Aid Kit.
The ‘Brit Awards,’ which started in 1977, is an awards ceremony hosted by the British Record Industry Association. Award candidates are selected by a panel vote consisting of radio and TV DJs and hosts, broadcasting companies’ executives, record companies’ representatives, and journalists.
Past International Group of the Year winners includes Bon Jovi, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Green Day. The group bulletproof boy band (BTS) was nominated for this category for the first time as a K-pop artist in 2021 and was nominated consecutively last year but did not win.
This year’s ‘Brit Awards’ will be held in Korean on the 12th of next month.
Meanwhile, BLACKPINK will be the headliner (signboard performer) of “The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival 2023,” one of the largest music festivals in the United States. First time as an Asian musician and the first time as a girl group.
The Coachella Festival will be held from April 14th to 16th and the 21st to 23rd. It will be held over two weeks, and Blackpink will perform on April 15th and 21st. Alternative R&B master Frank Ocean and Latin pop superstar Bad Bunny served as headliners.
