Plans to further expand the Avatar franchise seem endless. In an interview with Empire magazine published Monday, James Cameron, the writer, director, and creator of the Avatar series, revealed his plans for the universe.
Cameron said he’d told Disney he wanted to expand the Avatar story through animation further.
“I’d love to do an animated anthology series, telling stories that are set in the world of Avatar but that are outside of what you’d expect from it,” said Cameron, the 1997 director of Titanic. “That could include animated films. It could be streaming features, it could be theatrical features.”
Spin-off development like “The Animatrix”
Cameron also cited The Animatrix (2003) as a “great example” of his idea because “they pushed the envelope within the world of The Matrix.” However, the Oscar-winner explained that his concept for Avatar is still in the planning stages. “We haven’t done much with it yet. We’re still gathering stories and working on that sort of thing,” Cameron said.
“I have to find a select few filmmakers and animators who want to do this.” Cameron’s third film in the Avatar series, Avatar: Fire and Ashes, is due to hit theaters on December 19th, and the first trailer, released on Monday, has already garnered rave reviews, with some calling it “one of the most beautiful visuals I’ve seen this year.”
James Cameron and Billie Eilish: A secret 3D project is underway
Cameron’s upcoming plans also include a secret 3D project he’s working on with Billie Eilish, which was announced earlier this month. “You may have noticed there are more cameras than usual today. I can’t give away any details yet, but what I can say is that I’m working on something very special with a man named James Cameron, and it’s going to be in 3D,” Eilish told the crowd on the first night of his Manchester show.
