In August 2022, “Weekly Shonen Jump” is sweeping the movie box office in Japan and the United States. While “ONE PIECE FILM RED” exceeded 9.2 billion yen in box office revenue in Japan and is about to reach 10 billion yen, “Dragon Ball Super Super Hero” (2022) is a big hit in North America. It won No. 1 in the weekend box office ranking from August 19th to 21st.

“Dragon Ball Super: Super Heroes” was released in 3018 theaters in North America, earning 20.1 million dollars in three days. Considering that the previous work “Dragon Ball Super: Broly” (2018) had 9.81 million dollars in 1238 theaters in its first run, it seems that the strategy of expanding the release scale and entering further competition has paid off. The previous work was distributed by FUNimation, but the company integrated the brand into Crunchyroll).

This work is the 21st film in the “Dragon Ball” movie series, and when it was released on June 11th in Japan, it won No.1 for the first time. One month later, on July 11, the box office revenue exceeded 2 billion yen. However, this time, it earned 2.7 billion yen in just three days in North America, already surpassing the Japanese box office (137.14 yen per dollar *as of August 22nd). It reminds us once again of the size of the North American film market.

The gender ratio of the audience is 75% male and 25% female. In terms of age group, 70% of the total was from 18 to 35 years old. By the way, IMAX screenings are being held in 324 theaters in North America, and have recorded good results of about 3.4 million dollars in 3 days.

In recent years, there have been an increasing number of hits in North America by Japanese anime movies/manga-based movies. In April 2021, “Kimetsu no Yaiba: Infinite Train Edition” (2020) also recorded $21.23 million (only 1614 theaters) in three days. The characteristics are similar to Marvel and DC superhero movies, and fans tend to flock immediately after release, and the rate of decline after that is high. “Dragon Ball Super: Super Heroes” will also need to be watched closely.

After losing to “Dragon Ball Super”, the first appearance in second place was the survival action “Beast” starring Idris Elba. Doctor Nate, played by Idris, visits South Africa with his two daughters and fights against a ferocious lion that hates humans. Distributor Universal decided to release the movie on a large scale with 3,743 theaters, but the box office record for three days was 11.57 million dollars. It’s a modest production budget of about $36 million, but it’s got off to a rather rough start.

This work has a critic score of 66% and an audience score of 77% on Rotten Tomatoes. It received a “B” rating in CinemaScore based on exit polls. Viewed as a horror/panic movie in which lions attack humans, the audience evaluation was off to a good start, so word of mouth and future digital releases will be the key to catching up. It will be released in Japan on September 9th.

Due to the first appearance of “Dragon Ball Super” and “Beast”, this week’s rankings below 3rd place basically moved down by 2 ranks from last week. However, it is “Top Gun His Maverick” that still vomits in such a way. The North American box office grossed $683.37 million, finally surpassing “Avengers: Infinity War” (2018) to become the sixth highest-grossing film of all time.

This work, which continues to be a worldwide hit, has exceeded $1.4 billion in cumulative worldwide box office revenue. Although it is not disclosed in the two major markets of China and Russia, it started with $ 98.5 million in the UK and $ 85.5 million in Japan, followed by South Korea ($ 64.6 million), Australia ($ 62.2 million), France ($ 54.7 million), etc. shows particularly good results in

“Top Gun Maverick” will be released digitally in North America on August 23rd, and Blu-ray & DVD will be released on November 1st. Even so, it is expected that the current pace of the show will be maintained by repeaters seeking a “top gun experience” unique to theaters and by rushed audiences. It’s not impossible for it to surpass “Black Panther” (2018)’s $700.42 million, making it the fifth-highest-grossing movie of all time.

By the way, although it did not enter the top 10, the prequel film “Orphan: First Kill” (original title) of “Esther” (2009) made its first appearance in 12th place. In North America, the movie was streamed simultaneously on Paramount+, resulting in a small theatrical release of only 498 theaters and grossing $1.67 million in three days.

This work is the first new work in 13 years and is a prequel film, but it is also a hot topic that Isabelle Fuhrman, who plays Esther, is returning. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film received a 71% critics score and a 74% audience score, giving it generally positive reviews for a horror film.
