Netflix and WIT STUDIO have released a video that takes a look behind the scenes of the production of
They released a roughly 20-minute video that includes details on the work in its early stages of production and interviews with key staff members. Image boards for the film have also been released (seen in the image gallery below).
THE ONE PIECE was announced as a surprise in December 2023. Director Masashi Koizuka reflected when he heard about the project and said, “I was a bit skeptical.” However, after that, he had the opportunity to talk with the original author, Eiichiro Oda, and he began to feel like “It’s true.” He also said he was told to incorporate the work into his expression rather than imitating it.
The story itself is the same, but THE ONE PIECE may depict scenes from different angles or emphasize different parts. WIT STUDIO even created 3D maps of each location in a video game-like format to find interesting spots and angles, which can be seen in the video. Koizuka also pointed out that the team has many young staff members.
These young staff members are from the generation that started One Piece when they were old enough to understand and have experienced the excitement of reading it in real-time. He described the team as “a group of people who know how hot this panel was and how much fun it was to read it” and said that this is the strength of The One Piece and the team.
The longevity and popularity of One Piece were never particularly questioned, but The One Piece came about thanks to many fans asking for this style of remake for years. Koizuka clarifies that he is ready to stay involved for the long haul. “(Regarding “THE ONE PIECE”), we are facing it with the understanding that it will be a long series.
Also, if what we create and release is well-liked, it will continue for a considerable time. If it continues for a long time, it is a work that is loved, so we are making it with the desire to continue it for a long time, to continue it forever.” The release date for “THE ONE PIECE” has not yet been announced, but Netflix seems to be running a large-scale marketing campaign, so it probably won’t be long until it is released. “THE ONE PIECE” will be distributed on Netflix and other platforms.
