A brand-new Gundam universe is taking shape. Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO, the latest television anime project in the long-running Gundam franchise, is officially scheduled to begin airing in April 2027 in Japan and North America. The series is part of the newly announced RG Project, a multimedia initiative that connects the anime with the upcoming action game GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT.

Alongside the anime’s release window, Bandai Namco has also confirmed the launch date for GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT. The high-mobility action game will be released on March 5, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. A new release-date announcement trailer has also been released, giving fans a closer look at the game’s characters, Mobile Suits, story, and fast-paced combat.

Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO Will Premiere in April 2027

Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO was introduced as part of the new RG Project, which aims to create a completely new science-fiction world within the Gundam franchise. Unlike stories set in established Gundam timelines such as the Universal Century, this project introduces its own setting, history, technology, and conflict.

The official Gundam announcement confirms that the anime will launch in April 2027, with Japan and North America specifically confirmed at this stage. Information about additional regions is expected to be announced separately.

The anime is being directed and written for series composition by Kenji Kamiyama, best known for his work on Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Science-fiction author Toh EnJoe is serving as the SF setting supervisor, while Eiichi Shimizu is responsible for the Gundam design.

Animation production is being handled by SOLA ANIMATION, with Miyako Takasu working on character design and serving as supervising animation director. STATO is credited with the original character designs, while Go Shiina is composing the music.

A Completely New Gundam Timeline

One of the most important things for newcomers to understand is that RG XARX-ZERO is not simply another story taking place in the traditional Gundam timeline.

The RG Project introduces a new historical era known as A.A., or After Apocalypse. The anime takes place in A.A. 45, while GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT is set roughly a century later. The two titles therefore tell different stories within the same larger universe.

The official story begins with an autonomous interstellar object arriving from beyond the Solar System. The object brings humanity three extraordinary technological breakthroughs: gravity control, faster-than-light communication, and cognitive materialization. These discoveries lead to unprecedented prosperity and allow humanity to expand throughout the Solar System.

However, the situation changes dramatically less than ten years after the object’s discovery.

The object begins to malfunction and produces an aggressive, self-propagating ecosystem. Humanity eventually comes to call this mysterious threat the Apocalypse.

After three months of fighting, humanity is unable to defeat the Apocalypse and is eventually forced to abandon Earth. That moment becomes the beginning of the A.A. calendar.

By A.A. 45, generations of people have been born on the Moon and in space colonies. For them, the Apocalypse is not merely a historical disaster—it is an unavoidable part of everyday life.

Who Is Ray Azumi?

The story follows Ray Azumi, voiced by Takeo Otsuka.

Ray is a war orphan who lost his parents during an attack by the Apocalypse. He becomes the assigned pilot of the Gundam ZERO, a new-generation Mobile Suit developed specifically to fight the threat.

The official story description begins with Ray awakening on the surface of the Moon, suggesting that his personal journey will be closely connected to the larger mystery surrounding the Apocalypse and humanity’s future.

For viewers who are new to Gundam, a Mobile Suit is essentially a giant humanoid combat machine used by humans in warfare. The Gundam name is generally associated with advanced Mobile Suits, although the meaning and technology behind “Gundam” changes from one Gundam universe to another.

In this new timeline, Ray’s machine is called Gundam ZERO, with the model number XARX-0. It is described as an advanced experimental Mobile Suit designed to counter the Apocalypse and is classified as a new-generation “Gundam-type” machine.

What Is the Apocalypse?

The Apocalypse is one of the central mysteries of the new Gundam universe.

According to the official setting, it originated from the autonomous interstellar object that arrived from outside the Solar System. The object eventually separated and proliferated into a silicon-based life form or ecosystem capable of aggressive self-replication.

Rather than being presented as a conventional human enemy, the Apocalypse represents a completely different kind of threat. Humanity is essentially fighting an expanding ecosystem that has changed the balance of life and technology across the Solar System.

This concept gives RG XARX-ZERO a different science-fiction foundation from many previous Gundam stories, where conflicts have traditionally focused heavily on human factions, political struggles, and military organizations.

GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT Game Release Date Confirmed

The companion game GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT will launch on March 5, 2027, just one month before the anime begins.

The game will be available for:

  • PlayStation 5
  • Xbox Series X|S
  • PC via Steam

Developed by Bandai Namco Studios, GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT is described as a high-mobility action game featuring cinematic storytelling and fast, close-range combat. Players will pilot powerful Mobile Suits and fight across locations throughout the Solar System.

The game is set in the same universe as Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO, but its story takes place generations later. This means fans will be able to experience the same world from two different points in its history.

The game stars the Gundam Helix, a new Mobile Suit designed specifically for the game’s combat system. Players will also be able to customize their Mobile Suit with different parts, equipment, colors, and Apocalypse Units to suit their preferred playstyle.

How the Anime and Game Are Connected

The relationship between the two projects is one of the most interesting aspects of the RG Project.

Rather than creating an anime adaptation of the game, Bandai Namco is building the two works as separate entries within a shared universe. The anime explores an earlier period of this world, while GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT takes place much later.

In other words, viewers do not need to think of RG XARX-ZERO as “the anime version of the game.”

Instead, the two projects are designed to show different perspectives of the same larger history. The official RG Project description emphasizes that the anime and game portray their shared world from different perspectives and across different generations.

This approach could also make the project more accessible to newcomers because viewers can begin with the anime without needing previous knowledge of the Gundam franchise or the game.

Kenji Kamiyama’s New Vision for Gundam

Kenji Kamiyama is taking on a major creative role in the project as both director and series composition writer.

Kamiyama has worked on several major science-fiction anime projects, most notably Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. He has also worked on projects such as Eden of the East and Star Wars: Visions.

For RG XARX-ZERO, Kamiyama is developing a new Gundam setting rather than simply returning to an established timeline.

In an official interview, Kamiyama explained that creating a Gundam outside familiar timelines gave him an opportunity to rethink what makes Gundam recognizable while building something new for the Reiwa era.

Science-fiction author Toh EnJoe is also involved as the SF setting supervisor. His role is particularly important for a project built around concepts such as autonomous interstellar objects, cognitive materialization, faster-than-light communication, and a self-replicating alien ecosystem.

Gundam ZERO and Gundam Helix

The two projects also introduce their own signature Gundam machines.

In the anime, Ray Azumi pilots the Gundam ZERO, model number XARX-0. It is an experimental anti-Apocalypse Mobile Suit and represents the cutting edge of technology in the A.A. 45 era.

Meanwhile, GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT introduces the Gundam Helix, which is designed around the game’s high-mobility combat system.

Bandai Namco has already announced several merchandise and Gunpla products based on these machines, including an HG Gundam Zero model kit and a special-color Gundam Helix Gunpla connected to the game’s Collector’s Edition.

GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT Pre-Orders and Editions

Pre-orders for GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT are already available, with several editions announced.

The game has Standard, Launch, Deluxe, and Collector’s Editions. Depending on the edition, players can receive digital bonuses, artwork and music selections, Mobile Suit customization items, and physical merchandise.

The Collector’s Edition includes an HG 1/144 Gundam Helix Earth Blue Ver. Gunpla, a steel case, and Gundam Card Game promotional cards, alongside the game and digital content.

A pre-order bonus also provides early access to the Earth Blue Color Customization.

A New Starting Point for Gundam Fans

For longtime Gundam viewers, Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO represents a major opportunity to explore a completely new timeline.

For beginners, the project may be even easier to approach because the story is not dependent on decades of previous Gundam continuity. The anime establishes its own world, its own calendar, its own technological history, its own enemy, and a new cast of characters.

The basic premise is simple: humanity expanded across the Solar System after receiving extraordinary technologies from an object beyond the Solar System. That object eventually produced the Apocalypse, forcing humanity to abandon Earth. Forty-five years later, Ray Azumi awakens on the Moon and becomes the pilot of Gundam ZERO.

From there, the series is expected to explore Ray’s struggle against the Apocalypse while gradually revealing more about the mysterious technology and history that created the world he lives in.

When Will Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO Release?

Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO is scheduled to begin its television broadcast in April 2027.

Japan and North America have been confirmed for the April 2027 launch, while additional regional release information is expected to be announced later.

Before that, GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT will arrive on March 5, 2027, giving fans their first opportunity to experience the new RG Project universe through an interactive game.

With the anime and game telling stories from different periods of the same universe, the RG Project is shaping up to be one of Gundam’s biggest new multimedia initiatives, introducing a fresh timeline while retaining the franchise’s central fascination with Mobile Suits, warfare, humanity, and science fiction.
