“Obocchama-kun” is a series based on the original manga by Yoshinori Kobayashi, which was broadcast on TV Asahi from 1989 to 1992. It depicts the school life of Chama Gobo, the heir to the world-famous “Gobo Zaibatsu,” with unique gags. The series caused a big stir at the time of broadcast, along with its distinctive “Chama-go” (language that is still used today), such as “Oha yogurt” and “Such a banana.”
In recent years, the series has received a great response when it was broadcast on an Indian kids’ channel, which has led to the decision to co-produce it with Japan. The new series will be co-produced by TV Asahi and Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI), a local Sony subsidiary, with 26 episodes (22 minutes each).
Shin-Ei Animation, which produced the original anime, will write the screenplay, and animation production will be done in India. Before broadcast, the new series also had its world premiere at the international content trade fair ” MIPCOM 2024,” held in Cannes, France, on October 21st.
After the screening, the production team held a talk session, and it was said that the new work, which was realized in response to requests from Indian children, attracted a lot of interest from stakeholders worldwide. Starting next spring, it will be broadcast nationwide in India on “SONY YAY!”, a kids’ channel under SPNI.
