Since it was aired in 2007, I have reviewed the whole story through “Denno Coil”. The impact of “Denno Coil” is awe-inspiring because I started working on animation-related editing around 2005.
I remember that I went to the premiere of the completed show held at NHK just before the broadcast of “Denno Coil”. I was looking forward to seeing Mitsuo Iso live, but he was absent because of poor physical condition (Note 1). Although it was a pity, I felt that it would be more “likely” for Director Iso not to attend at that time. When I heard the news of his absence, I remember being unscrupulous and secretly swelling in my heart. Since then, I have come to understand the mood of some fans who are happy for some reason, even if the live performance of a prominent artist is cancelled or postponed just before.
There may be a little explanation as to why I thought that way at the time. In the words of Kenichi Yoshida (character design), who teamed up with Iso’s latest work, “The Orbital Children”, Iso before “Denno Coil” has done “changing the scenery of animation”. It was an animator known to everyone in the know. Invented “Full three frames” that expresses rich movements by drawing all the activities of 3 frames in the original picture, and the first machine of “Neon Genesis Evangelion” episode 19 “, Battle of the Man” preys on the apostle He has worked on the original drawings of terrifying scenes that overwhelm the viewer, such as the scene of the movie, the battle between the second machine of the old movie version “AIR” and the EVA mass production machine.
In “BLOOD THE LAST VAMPIRE”, released in 2000, he works in a way that is out of the standard when he was in charge of drawing with shooting. He creates new techniques and creates new animations that will surprise the viewer. I was only expecting the news that Mr Iso would direct the original TV series for the first time. I was conscious of the selfish belief that people so particular about it would not be expected in public. Is. Fifteen years later, he met for the first time in an interview with “The Orbital Children”. I enjoyed talking about the service spirit with a friendly personality, and I tried to make the most of the fun atmosphere in the interview manuscript (Note 2).
At that time, I felt that I was paying attention only to drawing, but even now, the appeal of “Denno Coil” drawing has not faded at all, and I think that such a fantastic thing was made well. At the opening, the running Isako suddenly stopped and crouched down to write the code, which made me surprised every time, and the movement of climbing the stairs to reflect the feet of the main characters expresses each character. It can only be said that it is fantastic to do highbrow things in the TV series.
Compared to the dense and realistic art that is often seen in high-quality anime works, the art of “Denno Coil” seems to be weaker. Still, when it is reviewed again, it is established with an exquisite balance that matches the pale colour of the character. I noticed that I was doing it. By drawing a story full of digital things with a desaturated look, a mysterious world of work that is new but nostalgic is constructed. It also leads to a sense of continuity between reality and the world seen with cyber glasses.
The fact that the red Satchie, which appears as a natural enemy of children, is dangerous at a glance is also a significant effect of such colour design. It is also a fresh expression that the battle on the cyber brain is drawn by blinking light like the access lamp of the hard disk, and it appears in a different form in the latest work “Extraterrestrial Boys and Girls”.
I also enjoyed the 12th episode, “Daichi, Hair Growth”, on the air, which I thought was last. From the beginning of the beard of the general kid character, Daichi, to the horizon that makes us think of the stupidity of humankind when we see the “century of images”, we are full of fantasy.
“Denno Coil” humorously depicts the world of children’s play that anticipates AR (augmented reality) in the first half of the series. The second half is a serious drama about the past of the main characters while digging into the shadows hidden in that world. Is expanded. At the time of the air, I liked the fun episodes in the first half by far, and I couldn’t finish the drama in the second half, but when I saw it again, the impression changed a lot.
The foreshadowing that was carefully done from the beginning was recovered, and the story of the large furoshiki was brilliantly folded at the end. It was a masterpiece, and I was able to reconfirm that I had been thought out so far. Especially in the latter half, I think it is suitable for watching at once in the distribution, so if you touched the director Iso’s work in Netflix’s “Orbital Children”, please enjoy the world of “Denno Coil” as it is.
