On June 29, Billboard updated its charts for the week ending on July 3. Some of the biggest acts in K-pop managed to enter the Billboard 200 for the first time or the nth time.
Billboard 200 is one of the main two charts in the United States, with the other being Hot 100. It ranks the most popular albums and extended plays in the US by adding the physical album sales to the number of streams and downloads converted into album sales.
It is known that the size of the fandom rather than popularity affects the albums’ performance on this chart.
BTS, TXT, and SEVENTEEN Enter This Week’s Billboard 200
According to the latest Billboard 200, BTS’s fourth studio album “MAP OF THE SOUL: 7” and the mini-album “BE” took the Nos. 102 and 141, respectively.
These two albums entered the Billboard 200 without missing a week after release. Because of this, BTS “MAP OF THE SOUL: 7” has now spent a total of 70 weeks, while “BE” has spent 31 weeks so far.
BTS’s junior group TOMORROW X TOGETHER (TXT) also successfully charted Billboard 200 for the week ending on July 3.
TXT “The Chaos Chapter: Freeze” took the No. 82 spots on Billboard 200, marking its third consecutive week on the chart.
Previously, “The Chaos Chapter: Freeze” debuted at No. 5 in the week ending on June 19 and climbed down to No. 34 in the week ending on June 26.
The last K-pop boy group to enter this week’s Billboard 200 is SEVENTEEN with their new album “Your Choice.”
SEVENTEEN “Your Choice” scored the highest rank among the K-pop albums this week. It debuted at No. 15 on Billboard 200, becoming the boy group’s first-ever entry.
SEVENTEEN surpassed 17th place, which they initially targeted for their debut on Billboard 200.
TWICE is the Only K-pop Girl Group on This Week’s Billboard 200
In addition to BTS, TXT, and SEVENTEEN, the K-pop girl group TWICE also occupied a spot on the US chart.
TWICE “Taste of Love” secured the No. 60 positions on Billboard 200, marking its second consecutive week on the chart.
“Taste of Love” previously entered at No. 6 on the US chart, becoming TWICE’s third entry after “MORE & MORE” and “Eyes Wide Open.”
In addition, TWICE “Taste of Love” achieved the second-highest-ranking on Billboard 200 in history among the K-pop girl group albums, following BLACKPINK “THE ALBUM,” which peaked at No. 2.
It is unusual for an album of four K-pop groups to enter the Billboard 200 simultaneously.
The fact that the rankings did not enormously drop or did not chart out even in the second and third week of release is a sign that their fandom in the United States has become more prominent than before.
And as time passes by, Billboard 200 has become a playground for K-pop as more and more idol groups enter the chart.
An official from the music industry predicted that as the fandom of various K-pop acts increases, the number of K-pop groups not under large agencies would also enter the Billboard 200.
