On September 20th, Netflix announced that it is producing a new anime series in the Cyberpunk genre. Netflix also announced the “Once Upon a Time” trailer videos and “To Night City.”

This announcement was made during Netflix’s announcement event, ” Geeked Week 2024.” The trailer video released shows the logo of CD Projekt RED, the developer of the open-world game Cyberpunk 2077, and the words “Once Upon a Time” and “To Night City.”

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is a story about a future city called Night City, where technology and human modification have become commonplace.

Netflix is currently streaming the anime Cyberpunk: Edge Runners. The anime is a spin-off of Cyberpunk 2077 by CD PROJEKT RED, a game development company known for the Witcher series. The 10-episode series follows the story of David Martinez, a boy who survives in Night City, a futuristic city where technology and body modification have become commonplace. The anime studio TRIGGER produces it. The director is Hiroyuki Imaishi, who worked on Gurren Lagann and Promare.

For the ending, illustrator/animator Mai Yoneyama was responsible for direction, storyboarding, direction, and original drawings. When it was released in September 2022, the film received high praise. It also contributed to increased sales of the original game released in 2020.

Will TRIGGER be involved in the production? How does it relate to the previous work?

It is still being determined what this new anime will be like. It has not been revealed whether it will be related to “Cyberpunk: EdgeRunners” like a spin-off, whether TRIGGER will be involved in the production as with the previous work, or what the characters and time setting will be.

In addition, “Cyberpunk 2077” will be released with the expansion content “Temporary Freedom,” which will add a new story in September 2023. Cyberpunk: EdgeRunners is also scheduled to release the tabletop RPG “Cyberpunk: EdgeRunners Mission Kit” in winter 2024. It seems that the “Cyberpunk” series will continue to expand.
